Course Description

Distance Learning – suggested 12 months part-time study (Nominal hours 820)

In our Equine Herbal Medicine course students enter the wonderful world of herbal medicine to learn the differences between historic holistic and modern herbalism, along with the notable merits of herbal medicine methodologies in treating the equine body from the ‘whole-body’ wholistic perspective. Herbal Medicine specific to horses provides the student with information to build professional credibility in herbal medicine as it should be applied in clinical practice.

Learning the foundation, therapeutic and clinical principles behind herbal medicine ensures the students have gained the required knowledge to comprehend the safety and efficiency of herbal medicine for horses.

As students’ progress through the course, they will learn the art and science of plant morphology, botanical terminology, taxonomy, and nomenclature. Students will learn to recognise micro and macroscopic physical characteristics of plants, identify plant specimens and describe relationships between plants and their environments. This information serves as the foundation for the study of herbal pharmacy and pharmacology, and herbal therapeutics. Understanding the therapeutic actions of herbs for equine use, will aid in the students’ knowledge of what herbs are appropriate for in each of the body’s systems.

Students will also learn herbal identification, actions, constituents, indications, contraindications and medicinal combinations in detail. It is important for our students to have a sound understanding of the active chemistry associated with plant medicine and the Pharmacokinetics associated, that may influence the actives both negatively and positively.

There is no doubt the information learned in this course is a journey to behold, a journey we hope will never be lost, forgotten and disregarded, especially for our beloved herbivore plant eating Equine partners.

Enrolling in this course may very well earn the graduating student a place in Equine herbal history.
