Course Description

Distance Learning – suggested 30 months part-time study (Nominal hours 1,960)

Naturopathy is the medicinal foundation of treating the whole-body system, combining philosophy and theories in practice, to support healing and maintain health. Naturopaths provide evidence-based health care that is effective and safe to their feline clients. Through an in-depth understanding of feline bioscience, emotional and physical factors, Naturopaths are able to help prevent disease, provide optimal health and wellbeing and relief of symptoms by treating the whole cat and aim to address the underlying causes of illness and disease.

The core principle of "healing through the biological science of nature" guides the feline naturopath’s use of species-specific nutrition, complimentary prescribing of herbal medicine and nutrient compounds, right through to biomechanics. Feline naturopathic medicine heavily focuses on combining food as medicine traditions and dietary therapy (dietetics) with recent scientific advances in nutritional biochemistry which are now used by veterinarians and naturopathic practitioners alike. Graduates will assess the lifestyle of the animal and consider the biology of the species from an anatomy and physiology perspective.

The core principles of this Naturopathic Medicine course follows the foundational subjects of Anatomy, Nutrition, Herbal Medicine, Herbal Manufacturing, Body Physiology and the final subject of Naturopathic Principles, that brings all learning together.

Students explore a wide range of bioscience units in-depth through species-specific studies in contraindications, origins & domestication, anatomy and physiology, clinical nutrition, analysis of commercial food products, essential nutrients, mineral/vitamin deficiencies, herbal medicine, constituents of therapeutics, visual and tactile assessments, biomechanics, conformation, behaviour assessments; as well as business practices, ethics, safety, and efficacy.

It must be pointed out that at times it will be essential that a veterinarian diagnosis is undertaken, this may include blood tests, x-ray, CT scans, MRI, the results obtained from these tests will help to clarify the best way to determine aspects of certain conditions, illness and disease and how best to complement the allopathic treatments prescribed. Naturopathic medicine can easily work alongside veterinary medicine in order to help the individual cat reach optimum health.

Feline naturopathy aims to restore vitality through supporting and stimulating the body’s own healing mechanisms. Naturopathy today occupies an important and prominent role in the contemporary health-care system with a rich history dating back thousands of years. Health, from a naturopathic perspective, involves the capacity to maintain optimal order and function of the body (homeostasis) and is an outcome of a healthy mind, body, and environment.
